Free walks

Cañadón

A full loop through the Cañadón del Arroyo Calafate on the outskirts of town: climbs among sedimentary rock formations and Patagonian shrubs to an 829m plateau overlooking the steppe, passes near Cascada del Desierto, which freezes over in winter, and returns a different way. It's not the short walk it looks like from town: almost 14km with a serious elevation gain. Little known to tourists, popular with locals who give it a full day.

Local tip

This is a full-day hike (4-5 hours of actual walking, plus however long you stop to rest or take photos): bring food, plenty of water, and let someone know your route.
